Welcome to Ren's Corner! Come along with us as we follow Ren to talk about Construction Administration.
Ren Ramsey is a fifth-generation builder and contractor. He's been part of the Stewart-Cooper-Newell family as Construction Administrator for eleven years, growing up in the construction business with his father. In fact, when he was barely old enough to hold one, his father cut a shovel in half, handed it to him, and told him to "Get in the hole and clean it out". Since then, he's had many years of experience in menial labor, and has been a superintendent, a tradesman, and a project manager.
For Stewart-Cooper-Newell, every project has a scheduled pre-construction meeting where Ren sits down with our contractors and talks about the proper and improper ways to execute construction tasks from his years of being on the job. "I have a lot of information to share, and I like teaching people."
With his experience as a contractor, this makes Ren very in tune with spotting problems and issues before they happen, or if they've already happened, how to correct them. "So, a lot of times, the only way to correct something is to tear it out and do it again. And nobody wants to hear that,” Ren says. “If I can mentor them to do it, and they will allow me to mentor them, then that's when things go really good."
Ren notes that the way he does CA is based on supervision, communication, and hands-on experience.
"My experience as a superintendent/project manager was I never sat down on the job, never sat in the trailer. Always running laps on the job, making sure stuff was getting done. That's why stuff gets in the wrong place, because no one's out there herding cats."
Keep an eye out for our upcoming articles as we follow Ren on-site the next few months to see how he does CA.
