Trends that are Impacting Fire Station Design by Ken Newell, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

If you have spent time in the Fire & Rescue industry, you have likely seen many trends come and go. While some fade quickly, others prove valuable and reshape how fire stations are designed. Over five decades, several key trends have had a lasting impact, reflecting both advances in firefighting practices and a deeper understanding of firefighter health, safety, and operational needs.
One of the most significant developments is the focus on controlling dangerous contaminants. Studies have shown that firefighters face a substantially higher cancer risk due to repeated exposure to carcinogens encountered on fire grounds. These contaminants are often carried back to the station on personnel, protective gear, and apparatus, creating ongoing exposure risks. As a result, modern station design emphasizes a three-zone approach: Hot (dirty), Transition, and Cold (clean). Proper separation between these zones is critical. Transition areas now commonly include decontamination spaces, dedicated PPE storage, and separate “dirty” restrooms and showers to prevent contaminants from spreading into living and administrative areas. Many of the critical Hotzone Principals have been codified in the recently released NFPA 1585
Another major shift involves gender accommodations. As more women enter the profession, traditional bunkroom designs have become less effective. Large, shared sleeping areas or gender-separated bunkrooms often lead to inefficiencies due to changing personnel ratios. Increasingly, departments are adopting individual sleeping rooms, which provide privacy, flexibility, and improved rest for all firefighters regardless of gender.
Training integration within stations has also evolved. While large training centers remain valuable, many departments now incorporate training features directly into station design. Elements such as training towers, pump-test pits, and rope rescue areas can be added at relatively low cost. Additionally, multipurpose training rooms often double as community spaces, enhancing both operational readiness and public engagement.
The transition of volunteer departments to combination or fully career staffing models has further influenced design. This shift increases the need for expanded living spaces, including sleeping quarters, kitchens, and hygiene facilities. Forward-thinking designs often anticipate future growth by incorporating flexible bunking arrangements. Differences between volunteer and career staff may also affect building layout, circulation, and even parking and entry configurations.
Co-location with other public safety agencies has become more common as construction costs rise. Sharing facilities with EMS, law enforcement, or other municipal departments can significantly reduce expenses and maximize resources. Modern designs allow for shared infrastructure while maintaining operational independence, including separate entrances, secure areas, and independent building systems. In some cases, temporary co-location arrangements can also provide cost-effective future expansion opportunities.
Finally, there is a growing emphasis on designing stations that reflect their communities. Unlike older stations that often ignored local context, newer facilities are designed to complement surrounding architecture and neighborhood character. This approach fosters community pride and strengthens the station’s role as a civic asset.
These trends demonstrate how fire station design continues to evolve in response to changing needs. By prioritizing health, flexibility, efficiency, and community integration, today’s stations are better equipped to serve both firefighters and the public—now and into the future.
